About HORTGRO

HORTGRO, a pivotal player in South Africa’s fruit industry, has roots dating back to 1652 when the first apple seeds were planted at the Cape of Good Hope. This milestone marked the beginning of fruit farming in the region, which eventually led to the establishment of HORTGRO. The organization was formed to support fruit producers and farmers, focusing on production, research, technology, communication, market development, and the transformation of the fruit industry.

HORTGRO Bursary Programme Overview

For over 14 years, the HORTGRO bursary programme has played a crucial role in fostering a sustainable agricultural workforce in South Africa. With a significant investment of approximately R35 million, the programme is supported by HORTGRO, AgriSETA, and the Deciduous Fruit Industry Development Trust.

Currently, HORTGRO funds 68 students, with 27 undergraduates and 41 postgraduates pursuing degrees in Agriculture, Agricultural Economics, and Business Management at accredited South African institutions. These institutions include the University of Pretoria, Elsenburg Agricultural Training Institute, University of Limpopo, University of the Free State, Cape Town University of Technology, and Stellenbosch University.

The HORTGRO bursary is open to students pursuing studies in the following fields:

• Agriculture
• Agricultural Economics
• Business Management (related to agriculture)

Bursary Requirements and Eligibility

To be eligible for the HORTGRO bursary, applicants must meet the following criteria:

• Citizenship: Must be a South African citizen.
• Enrollment: Must be registered at a recognized educational institution.
• Field of Study: Must be an undergraduate or postgraduate student in Agriculture, Agricultural Economics, or Business Management.
• Academic Performance: Must demonstrate excellent academic performance.
• Financial Need: Must have proven financial need.

How to Apply for the HORTGRO Bursary

The application process for the HORTGRO bursary is straightforward. Follow these steps to apply:

1. Download the Application Form: Obtain the HORTGRO Bursary Application Form.
2. Complete the Application Form: Fill in all required information accurately.
3. Prepare Supporting Documents: Include certified copies of the following documents:
   • South African ID
   • Proof of registration in your preferred course at an accredited institution
   • Most recent academic progress report or Matric certificate
   • Previous three progress reports, if currently studying
   • Parent/guardian’s signature and consent letter (if under 21 years old)
   • Proof of the cost of the course, books, and accommodation
   • Parent/guardian proof of income
   • Parent/guardian ID
4. Submit Your Application:
