Scholarship Details

The GEM Scholarship for 2024 offers financial support for a three-year doctoral program. The scholarships available are:

  • GEM Elite Doctoral Scholarship: R200,000 per year for three years.
  • GEM Doctoral Scholarship: R150,000 per year for three years.

Shortlisted candidates will be contacted by October 16, 2023. If you do not receive communication by this date, please consider your application unsuccessful. The final awards are subject to fund availability and suitable supervisor appointments.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the GEM Scholarships, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Citizenship: Open to South African citizens or international students (historically disadvantaged South African citizens will be given priority).
  • Academic Requirements: Must have completed a master’s degree in a relevant field.
  • Commitment: Must pursue a full-time, three-year doctoral program aligned with the Faculty’s Research Themes.
  • Start Date: Must be ready to begin studies on January 15, 2024.
  • Academic Performance:
    • GEM Doctoral Scholarship: Minimum 65% in your master’s program.
    • GEM Elite Doctoral Scholarship: Minimum 70% in your master’s program.

How to Apply

  1. Download the Application: Obtain the Stellenbosch University GEM Scholarship Application 2024 form (.docx).
  2. Complete and Submit: Fill out the form and email it to GEM@sun.ac.za with the subject line “GEM Scholarship Application.”

Required Documents

Ensure you submit the following authenticated copies with your application:

  • Certified copy of your ID document.
  • Certified copy of your passport photo page (for international students).
  • Certified copies of all diploma/degree certificates and transcripts from previous tertiary studies.
  • A one-page motivation letter detailing your suitability for the scholarship (to be included in the application form).
  • Proof of English language proficiency (for international students or those who studied in non-English institutions) within the past 24 months.
  • A research concept note outlining your intended doctoral research topic (to be included in the application form).
