About INISA
Established in 1995, the Initiative Southern Africa (INISA) is a German non-governmental organization dedicated to fostering understanding and collaboration between Germany and Southern Africa. INISA’s mission is to educate German society on the social, economic, political, and cultural developments in Southern Africa, thereby promoting greater interest and engagement between the two regions. Operating independently and without political affiliations, INISA is funded through donations and membership contributions.
The organization’s diverse membership includes individuals from both South Africa and Germany, comprising students, researchers, country experts, and others with a keen interest in South African affairs. INISA’s activities range from publishing insightful research papers to organizing seminars, talks, and lectures on various aspects of South African life. Additionally, the organization offers guidance and support to Germans interested in spending time in South Africa.
Recognizing the importance of education in advancing Southern African nations, INISA is committed to supporting students in their academic endeavors. Many South African students face significant financial challenges in pursuing higher education, and to address this, INISA offers the INISA Student Grant, designed to assist South African youth in achieving their educational goals.
INISA Student Grant 2025: A Pathway to Educational Success
The INISA Student Grant 2025 is now open for applications from students attending universities and other tertiary institutions within the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region. The SADC countries eligible for this grant include:
- South Africa
- Botswana
- Angola
- Madagascar
- Mauritius
- Malawi
- Mozambique
- Namibia
- Swaziland
- The Democratic Republic of Congo
- Lesotho
- Tanzania
- Zimbabwe
- Zambia
The grant covers 75% of tuition fees and associated costs, such as study materials, books, and residence fees, up to a maximum of €3000 (or equivalent in local currency). This financial support is available to students across various disciplines, with a particular emphasis on those studying science, medicine, engineering, and economics.
Key Information:
- If multiple students are awarded the grant, the total amount will be divided equally among them.
- Recipients must provide fee account records as proof of tuition-related expenses, allowing INISA to allocate funds accordingly.
- Funds will be disbursed directly into the recipient’s university fee account.
- Grant recipients are required to submit two progress reports during the year they receive the grant.
Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for the INISA Student Grant 2025, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Be a national of one of the SADC countries listed above.
- Be enrolled full-time at a university or tertiary institution in one of the SADC countries.
- Be in the 2nd or 3rd year of undergraduate studies, having completed at least one year.
- Not be enrolled in a postgraduate degree program such as a Master’s, Honors, or Ph.D.

Applicants must submit the following documents with their application form. Incomplete submissions may result in disqualification:
- A detailed CV (maximum size 800 KB, in PDF/DOC/DOCX format)
- A recent photograph (maximum size 1 MB, in JPG/GIF format)
- A motivation letter (500-1500 words, maximum size 800 KB, in PDF/DOC/DOCX format)
- Names and contact details of two references (non-family members) who can support your application
- Information on any additional funding from public or private sources, such as tuition fee waivers, scholarships, grants, etc.
Important Note:
The motivation letter is the most crucial part of the application and plays a significant role in the selection process. It should provide a personal insight into the applicant’s character and aspirations, covering the following points:
- Why you chose your particular field of study and what it means to you.
- Your academic and career goals.
- How you spend your spare time.
- Why you believe you deserve the INISA grant.
- How this grant will impact your studies this year.
Closing Date
Applications must be submitted by 1st September 2024. Shortlisted candidates will be contacted for interviews, and applicants will be informed of their status in due course.
