Lisa Maskell-PANGeA Scholarship
The Lisa Maskell-PANGeA (Partnership for Africa’s Next Generation of Academics) Scholarship is a collaborative effort between Stellenbosch University and the Gerda Henkel Foundation. It is specifically designed for students in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences pursuing research in Historical Humanities.
Scholarship Details
- Value: R 420,000, paid over three years

- Research activities, including writing retreats
- Conference attendance fees
- Publication expenses
- Exclusions:
- Honours programs
- Coursework MA programs with a thesis component under 180 credits
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the Lisa Maskell-PANGeA Scholarship, applicants must:
- Be a resident of a sub-Saharan African country
- Be under 35 years old at the time of applying
- Have completed a full MA research thesis
- Be committed to pursuing a full-time PhD in Historical Humanities
- Plan to study at Stellenbosch University in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences
- Be entering their first year of PhD studies in the upcoming academic year
- Have achieved at least 70% in the final year of their last completed degree
Note: Meeting the eligibility criteria does not guarantee scholarship funding. Preference is given to students from PANGeA partner institutions. The selection committee’s decision is final.

- Pre-proposal of your research idea
- Writing sample (published work or MA thesis)
