UFS And Media24 Matriculant of the Year Competition Bursary | The University of Free State (UFS), in collaboration with Media24, is excited to announce the Matriculant of the Year Competition Bursary for 2024. This prestigious bursary is designed to support exceptional Matric students from specific districts in South Africa who are aiming to further their education at UFS.
About the University of Free State (UFS)
Founded in 1904 as Grey College, the University of Free State evolved into the University of Orange Free State in 1950 and has since grown into a leading institution in South Africa. With three campuses—South Campus, Main Campus, and Qwaqwa Campus—UFS offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications across nine faculties, including business, economics, education, health sciences, humanities, law, natural sciences, theology, and open schooling.
The UFS Matriculant of the Year Competition
In partnership with Media24, UFS offers a bursary through the Matriculant of the Year Competition. This bursary is open to outstanding Matric students and covers any field of study at UFS. The competition aims to recognize and reward students who exhibit academic excellence, leadership skills, and community involvement.
Benefits of the Bursary
- Prize Money: Financial support that can be used towards education or other pursuits.
- Personal Development: Opportunities for personal growth and exposure.
- Recognition: Winners and finalists are announced at a gala dinner hosted by UFS at the start of the 2024 academic year.
A total of 14 students will be selected as winners. The process includes:
- Selection of Semi-Finalists: 25 semi-finalists will be chosen based on their application forms.
- Finalist Selection: 14 finalists will be selected from the semi-finalists, with the announcement made on September 25, 2024.
Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for the UFS Matriculant of the Year Competition Bursary, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Current Matric Students: Must be in Matric for the 2024 academic year.
- Residency: Must be a resident of one of the following districts: Fezile Dabi, Lejweleputswa, Motheo, Thabo Mofutsanyana, or Xhariep.
- School Type: Must be studying at a Quintile 1, 2, or 3 school (Dinaledi, township, or rural schools).
- Academic Achievement: Must be a top achiever with an excellent track record.
- UFS Application: Must intend to study at UFS from the 2024 academic year and apply to UFS before the closing date of August 5, 2024.
Please note that meeting the eligibility criteria does not guarantee the award of the bursary, as final decisions are made by the UFS committee.
How to Apply
To apply for the bursary, follow these steps:
- Download the Application Form: Obtain the UFS Star of the Stars Bursary Competition Application Form here or at UFS campuses.
- Complete the Application Form: Accurately fill out the form with required information.
- Submit Required Documents:
- Certified ID documents
- Grade 11 results
- Matric results from March and June
- Documents showcasing leadership achievements and community involvement
- Motivational letter explaining why you deserve the bursary (see our tips on writing a motivational letter).
- Submit Application: Email your completed application and documents to Linda Greyling at greylinl@ufs.ac.za.
