About the African Scholars Fund
Founded to address the need for quality education during the apartheid era, the African Scholars Fund (ASF) continues to support learners from underprivileged backgrounds. The ASF provides financial assistance for school fees, uniforms, and transport, and offers mentorship and academic support to ensure students’ success throughout their secondary education.
ASF High School Bursary Programme
The African Scholars Fund is offering bursaries for the 2025 academic year to high school students demonstrating academic potential and initiative. Each year, the ASF awards approximately 2,300 bursaries to students in the Western Cape, Eastern Cape, and Northern Cape provinces.

Bursary Details
The ASF bursary provides R1,000 annually, paid directly to the student’s school. Payments are made in two installments: the first in February for school fees, uniforms, and stationery, and the second mid-year based on the student’s academic performance. ASF monitors academic progress through biannual assessments and provides guidance and support.
Eligibility Criteria
To apply for the ASF High School Bursary, applicants must:
- Reside in the Western Cape, Eastern Cape, or Northern Cape
- Attend one of the ASF-supported schools
- Be under 21 years old in the Matric year
- For Grade 7 students: Achieve an overall average of 60% and a minimum of 60% in all subjects
- For Grade 8 students: Achieve an overall average of 50% and a minimum of 50% in all subjects
- Have school fees of no more than R4,500 per year
- Have a total monthly household income of no more than R10,000
How to Apply
- Download and complete the African Scholars Fund Bursary Application Form.
- Alternatively, obtain application forms from the relevant ASF-supported schools.
- Enter “southafricanfinders.com” in the referral field on the application form.
Required Documentation:
- June 2024 school report
- Proof of household income (latest payslips, affidavit if unemployed, pension or grant receipts if applicable)
- Handwritten letter from the student describing themselves and their family
- Empty envelope addressed to the student, with a stamp (not sealed)
